1998
World Ice HPV
Championships

We have been holding these races on White Bear Lake since 1991. Since we seem to be the only group in the world hosting HPV races on ice, then our event must be the "World Ice HPV Championships" Mark Stonich 2/10/98

We were not invited to Nagano, even as a demonstration sport. Obviously an oversight.

We have three events;

  • 100 Meter Flying Start
  • 50 Meter Double Elimination Drag Races
  • 10 Lap Circuit Race
    The Sprints and Drags are held on a 3/4 mile straight that is plowed and flooded. The Circuit course is just plowed. It is rougher and has a bit of snow.

    Rules;

  • Vehicles must pass a safety inspection.
  • Style points are given for creative use of duct tape.
  • Fit, trained athletes are strictly prohibited.

    With 1st place in both the 100 meter flying start and the 50 meter drag races, and 4th in the circuit race, Ray Brick is the "World Champion". He is shown here in the coveted "Rainbow Union Suit" with "BioHazard", his ride for the drags and circuit race.

    Yours truly, on Matt's old "Junkyard Dog", modified for Ice Racing.

    You might be excused for thinking that suspension would be of limited value on ice. The bumps are low amplitude, but high frequency and skate blades have extremely limited compliance. I recommend soft springs and no damping, in this case two 1966 Barracuda valve springs.

    Tires
    Last year Sean Costin won the 100 m Sprints and the Circuit Race using slick tires, with sandpaper glued on for traction. Most of us ignored the fact than Sean is a really strong rider and theorized that his speed came from low power loss due to not pokeing holes in the ice with studs. This year there were several experiments to reduce tire drag;

    Jeff Caswell coated his tires with glue and rolled them in grit.

    Jon Sharratt used very few, large, studs and got 2nd in the drags.

    Luke Breen bonded industrial strength ScotchBrite to his tires. (in pic at left) He felt this slowed his top speed but worked very well in the Circuit Race.

    I used quite a few studs, but they were very small and sharp, netting me 3rd in the drags.

    A few others tried sandpaper, though some obviously used the wrong glue.
