The Logo:

  • feather: spirit, soul, higher self
  • eye: clarity of vision, intuition, receptivity, the feminine principle
  • hand: action, making, creating, the masculine principle

"All of these elements work together in the creative process and they represent my deepest desires as an artist. Thanks go to graphic designer, John Falker, for his excellent design. Working together we created a logo that beautifully expresses these concepts in visual terms." --- Rebecca Pavlenko

The Work:

"I have been doing photography for almost twenty years, ever since a magical experience in a photography class called me to the camera. Photography has been a teacher for me in many respects, presenting me with the challenges of science, chemistry and technology as well as history and art lessons.

Through it I have begun the process of balance--bringing together the intuitive, irrational, emotive sides of myself with the structural, linear, and technical. Photography is not only a tool of recording, it also functions as a mirror. Or as my Teacher would say, "Every portrait is a self portrait."

Portraits

"Being, at first, shy and reticent around people, the act of photographing was intimidating for me. But the desire to create a good portrait eventually brought me out of my shell and taught me to let go and focus on the sitter.

After a few years I discovered that I genuinely enjoyed everyone who came to be photographed, from the quiet little girl in her Sunday dress to the Harley rider with his menacing tattoos and gun collection to the successful high-finance businessman."

Theater Exhibits

"The theater work I do is not documentary in nature. In other words, I don't photograph the rehearsals or the play itself. Instead, I usually photograph the actors in my studio, creating work that is original yet complimentary to the production. The finished art is then hung in the lobby of the theater and is on display for the run of the show. I've created images in response to a number of productions."

CD Covers

"One of the best things about doing CD covers is that it gives me the opportunity to collaborate with artists who work in another discipline. In this way I've had the opportunity to work with the musicians of Emsemble Capriccio, Madeleine Hart, Brad Tuttle, Susan Flaskerud, Karl Burke, and children's musician, Will Hale--to name a few."

Personal Work

The work shown here is from an on-going personal project called the Actors Series. It involves photographing actors using a pedestal as a metaphor for the stage and asking each subject what it means to be an actor-- what are their fears, issues, struggles and joys in pursuing that career. I ask them to bring props or costumes, and as 'the director', I often create or add to what they have brought as we are working."

The Details:

Sittings are done at the studio and last about an hour. Since portraits are a collaboration, those being photographed are encouraged to contribute their personal ideas, and are welcome to bring props.

All prints are hand printed by the photographer in the old master tradition. Each print is archivally processed to museum standards and comes matted in 100% rag mat board. Hand-colored prints are individually painted with oil paints and pencils by the photographer.
