I was disappointed that to see your alternative newspaper overlook alternative parties in your article on the Republican Convention (6/24). Sounding just like the Pioneer Press, you said that the result of a Doug Johnson win in the DFL primary would be that "Minnesota will have a choice between two pro-lifers in the general election."
Yes, but Minnesotans would also have the option of voting for the libertarian-minded, Reform Party candidate Jesse Ventura for Governor or, for that matter, for the Green Party candidate Ken Pentel. There are lots of choices out there once you turn your back on the Hobson's choices thrown up by the Republicans and Democrats and decide to vote for your preferences rather than the big two's manipulative strategies.
You might remind your readers that one Secretary of State candidate--me--wants to free them from this box by instituting the "instant runoff ballot," which lets voters rank their choices for an office, 1, 2, 3. That way if your first choice candidate gets too few first choices from other voters, then your vote is transfered to your second choice. That way you can vote for a third party candidate and not worry about "throwing away your vote."
This and other fair share voting reforms are the basis of my candidacy for Secretary of State on the Reform Party ticket (with Jesse!). It's time to think outside the box.
